Wyoming
Ferruginous Hawk
Buteo regalis
In Cody, WY, this hawk experienced a fracture causing his right wing near the elbow joint to be permanently frozen at the wrong angle, leaving him unable to fly. Wyoming lived at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek, CA, for several years before coming to VINS in 2006.
Visitors loved to see this special and unfamiliar species. Residing primarily in the intermountain west, Ferruginous Hawks are the largest species of hawk in North America. However, they are specially adapted to hunt smaller prey, such as ground squirrels. Ferruginous Hawks are typically seen with a variety of color patterns, ranging from a reddish-chocolate dark morph, to Wyoming himself, who is a light morph.
The Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation ensures that all exhibit birds have comfortable enclosures and necessary medical care. Wyoming cannot reach some of the feathers on his injured wing, so our rehabilitation staff help preen these feathers during his biannual health checks.
Wyoming has sadly passed away, and the VINS community will surely miss him.
