Troy
Barred Owl
Strix varia
After a vehicle collision, Troy sustained a severe head injury leaving him blind in his left eye and abnormally unafraid of people. Slow to respond to danger, he would not have been able to survive in the wild. Since his arrival from Troy, NH, in 2013, Troy has been a reliable education bird.
Troy is stoic and calm on the glove, perching and greeting visitors without the slightest complaint. He often visits schools, ski resorts, and libraries during outreach programs, where he is always met with enthusiasm. Though Troy is the strong, silent type, and rarely hoots, he has delighted visitors who routinely hear Barred Owls in their backyards by allowing them to see such a great representative of the species up close!
The Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation ensures that our education birds have comfortable living quarters, biannual health checks, and a variety of nutritious foods.
