Northfield
Broad-winged Hawk
Buteo platypterus
Northfield was found as a nestling after falling from his nest in the summer of 2016. He was brought to VINS to treat his injuries and raise him until he could be released. Northfield was diagnosed with a fracture to the right shoulder joint. The Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation treated Northfield, but his bones set resulting in a slight droop in his right wing. This wing damage made it impossible for Northfield to fly well enough to make the long migration that broad-winged hawks make each year. Northfield was transferred to the VINS education department and serves as an education ambassador.
